Do-Gooders (Part 17)
Raise Their Kids
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV)
And these Words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach Them diligently to your children, and shall talk of Them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NKJV)
You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
2 Corinthians 3:2-3 (NIV)
Raising kids is not just material, although busy parents are exhausted. Meeting all their needs requires lots of work.

Raising kids is not just emotional. Although doting parents may feel great love, pampering them doesn't help them mature.

Raising kids is not just about schooling. Although aspiring parents may feel pride, cherishing grades can become an idol.

Raising kids well must be spiritual, because without God's direct involvement, our sweet hopes and best efforts will go wrong.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: I didn't know how to raise my kids. In my ignorance, God had my back before I knew His Son was my King. But this much I lived and still believe; most parents want to do a good job, so Our Father examples the job and His Word adds knowledge to the job.

He's a mix of tough and tender love, patience and never-ending mercy. He does not compromise His values. He offers day-by-day instruction. He magnifies our smallest efforts. He does not intrude when He's not asked, but stays watchful and available. He allows us to feel our mistakes and cheers every time we rise from them.

I could go on and on, but I won't. His Word shows and tells good parenting, so I encourage you to go There.

As His wise children in media, think of most fans as unruly kids--searching for a Dad they've never known. Therefore, whatever age you may be, learn all you can about parenting.*

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
