So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in Him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
When I was a girl, I used to work in my mother's modeling school. When I was a young woman, I became the boss and we expanded. In addition to modeling (my mother was a New York fashion model), we taught personal development: nutrition, fitness, skin care, makeup, posture, wardrobe planning and social graces, like introductions and etiquette--even how to enter and exit a room.
Looking good was the goal, and it worked like magic. The physical transformations brought dramatic results: increased self-esteem, improvement in grades, acceptance in colleges, promotions in jobs and for some: success in the entertainment industry. It was icing on the cake, but without the proper Substance, every cake falls flat. I didn't know it then.
Now I know better. As I've grown older, media has magnified our world's obsession with surface stuff. Makeover shows dominate 'reality' TV. They fuel our dreams for a better life. But is this fuel polluting the sky? Creating such a haze that desperate people can't see the real Transformer? I fear it is. Because the only transformation that lasts is one from the inside out.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: don't get lost in the haze, which is just a phase. It is destined to be razed (as in leveled), as opposed to raised (as in lifted) by God. Don't be reduced to your old self, no matter how hard your path, no matter how good the fake-lifts look.
The new you is all about heart. If you continue to put on Christ, He will continue to put on you all the aspects of a new life. Little by little, He will transform your externals to match your internals. Your makeover will not only be beautiful--it will stand the test of time.
'Now He has promised, 'Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.' The words 'once more' indicate the removing of what can be shaken--that is, created things--so that what cannot be shaken may remain' (Hebrews 12:26-27).
