An Axe To The Root (Part 4)
The Word Of God
As they were passing by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up. Being reminded, Peter said to Him, 'Rabbi, look, the fig tree which You cursed has withered.'
Mark 11:20-21 (NAS)
God reveals the bitter weeds that Satan sows in the gardens of our lives, like unforgiveness, envy, strife, anxiety, pride, doubt, and fear. Discernment shows Satan's flying serpents to be full-flown addictions like alcohol, drugs, immorality, smoking, shopping or unhealthy food. We see their consequences in depression, debt, disease, lost jobs, and broken homes.

So how do we take a spiritual axe to the root of these problems?

We do what Jesus did--speaking the power of God's words and believing them. The Bible calls the Word of God 'The Sword of the Spirit' (Ephesians 6:17). 'For the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword' (Hebrews 4:12). Apply God's words in faith, and His spiritual axe will obliterate the root of any problem.

Repeat after Him:

Depression? It is written, 'Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God' (Psalm 42:11). *Pour out your heart to Him. Cast your cares on Him, and end your prayer in praise.

Debt? It is written, 'And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus' (Philippians 4:19). *Add your specific petitions.

Disease? It is written, 'And by His stripes we are healed' (Isaiah 53:5). *Make it personal.

Immorality? It is written, 'No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it' (1 Corinthians 10:13). *Ask God to show you the way out--then take it.

Lost jobs? It is written, 'I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread' (Psalm 37:25). 'He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His Name's sake' (Psalm 23:3) *Ask God to restore your soul and to reveal the path to a better job.

Broken homes? It is written, 'Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted' (Matthew 5:4). *Ask God for comfort, healing, patience, and hope.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
