At Home In Heaven (Part 2)
Where Heaven Is
The Lord has established His Throne in Heaven, and His Kingdom rules over all.*
Psalm 103:19 (NKJV)
Thus says the Lord:
'Heaven is My Throne,
And earth is My footstool.
Where is the house that you will build Me?
And where is the place of My rest?
For all those things My Hand has made,
And all those things exist,'
Says the Lord.
'But on this one will I look:
On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit,
And who trembles at My Word.'
Isaiah 66:1-2 (NKJV)
Heaven is where God lives--along with Jesus and His angels. It's a place of incomparable joy. When true believers leave their temporary homes on earth, permanent physical residency with God awaits.
Until then, God's people seek Him here. In the Exodus of the Old Testament, the children of Israel built a sacred tent for God: a Tabernacle of meeting, the House of the Lord. Only Moses, Joshua and the high priests could enter into direct communion with God. As intercessors, they prayed for His people.
Later, King Solomon built a grand temple--following the passion and plans of His father, David. But at its dedication, Solomon realized its inadequacy: 'Will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the Heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built!' (1 Kings 8:27).
In the centuries that followed, this temple would be robbed and ransacked, ruined and rebuilt--only to be razed to the ground in 70 A.D. Today, upon the Temple Mount in Old Jerusalem sits the Dome of the Rock: the holiest shrine of the Muslim people. It was built in the 7th century when Israel fell under Muslim rule. It honors the place where they say the Prophet Muhammad traveled to Heaven to speak with God.**
Significantly, the House of the Lord is mentioned 211 times in the Old Testament, but not once in the New.*** Because when Jesus came down to earth, Heaven came down with Him.
King David experienced it personally: 'In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right Hand are pleasures forevermore' (Psalm 16:11). John the Baptist announced it publicly: 'Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!’ (Matthew 3:2).
So where is Heaven? Heaven cannot be contained in a geographical boundary, because God cannot be bound. At least, not ever again. Because once, God allowed His Son to be bound. Limitless Love was put in a Body and nailed on a Cross--causing an explosion of love that changed the entire universe.
Heaven burst forth--available to every person on earth. Its Location can be spelled in five letters: J-E-S-U-S.
