Bad Ideas (Part 13)
He's Gone Crazy!
Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that He and His disciples were not even able to eat. When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of Him, for they said, 'He is out of His Mind.'
Mark 3:20-21 (NIV)
Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.'
Mark 6:4 (NKJV)
Then His mother and brothers came to Him, and could not approach Him because of the crowd. And it was told Him by some, who said, 'Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see You.' But He answered and said to them, 'My mother and My brothers are these who hear the Word of God and do it.'
Luke 8:19-21 (NKJV)
When Jesus announced His ministry to the home-town folks in Nazareth, people he had known most of His Life, they wanted to throw Him off a cliff.* Who did He think He was, anyway? Weren't His parents Joseph and Mary? Wasn't He a simple Carpenter? Why was He acting like a Prophet?
His brothers were clearly embarrassed. When Jesus started preaching new Words and His fame was beginning to spread, they came to get Him and take Him home. They thought their big brother was crazy. Obviously, they were clearly wrong. To their credit, they came to believe and wrote two New Testament Letters.**
Actors, models and talent for Christ: If some of your kin think you're crazy and local church friends don't support you, you're looking more and more like Jesus. Because He was unconventional, stimulating and thought-provoking. Because when following the Captain becomes full of stagnant traditions, His soldiers are sleeping on the watch.
If church kin prefer form to freshness and conformity to standing out, they're into pleasing people, not God: 'Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers used to treat the false prophets in the same way' (Luke 6:26).
Actors, models and talent for Christ: Taking risks others won't is your job. So stay strong if loved ones don't get it. If they truly love the Lord and you, sooner or later they'll come around. Like the kin of Jesus and Joseph, who became their leading supporters.
