Bad Ideas (Part 16)
Mind Our Traditions!
So the Pharisees and teachers of the Law asked Jesus, 'Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?'

He replied, 'Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:

These people honor Me with their lips,

But their hearts are far from Me.

They worship Me in vain;

Their teachings are merely human rules.'

You have let go of the Commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.'

Mark 7:5-8 (NIV)
I believe Christians worship God in all kinds of forms and flavors. Statistics list up to 41,000 denominations, not counting home groups or underground churches in hostile nations.* Some, like Catholicism, trace their roots to the first century.

Their deeply woven canons and traditions seem ancient to us, especially compared to today's independent churches. Judaism and other religions go back even further. To some extent, faith in Jesus Christ is the new kid on the block.**

Nevertheless, Christians like order and substance, so they make rules. Indeed, the invisible God gave us visible Rules in His Book. Then Jesus fulfilled and updated God's Playbook in our own field. However, Christians disagree on His exact resolution.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: If we are the bride of God's Own Son, think of manmade rules like solid walls. Because if God did not ordain them, and if Jesus did not confirm them, then traditions are just partitions.

They divide believers from their Groom, from the world and most other Christians. God says a house divided can't stand. Surely, the fallout is evident, while Satan delights to write more rules--further alienating Blood kin.

Consider yourselves fighter pilots. Decaying walls are far beneath you, as you make air raids on the devil and drop love letters through media. Your flight Book was written by the Lord. To hold the course, study It daily. If directions start to confuse you, consult the perfect Navigator. God's Spirit is always by your side.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
