Bad Ideas (Part 28)
They're Just Kids!
Then the Word of the Lord came to me, saying:

'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;

Before you were born I sanctified you;

I ordained you a prophet to the nations.'

Then said I:

'Ah, Lord God!

Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.'

'Do not say, 'I am a youth,'

For you shall go to all to whom I send you,

And whatever I command you, you shall speak.

Do not be afraid of their faces,

For I am with you to deliver you,' says the Lord.

Jeremiah 1:4-8 (NKJV)
Then some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His Hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, 'Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.'
Matthew 19:13-14 (NASB)
Why did Jesus delight in small children? Was it because of their sweet innocence? Their fundamental lack of prejudice? Their indifference to social standings? Their honesty without hypocrisy? Their excitement about the smallest things? Their easy acceptance of miracles? Their quick forgiveness of pain and insults?

Their absence of personal agendas? Their delight in God's diverse creations? Their joy in being close to their parents? Their consuming desire to follow them? Their humility and vivacity? Their willingness to go to new places? Their focus on today, not tomorrow? Their natural state of hope, faith and love?

But if our children are born to grow up, if the world's influence grows upon them, how can they maintain godly values? If parents keep Jesus as their Center, then teens (who instinctively seek the truth), will grow into an army of leaders: going forth in the freshness of Jesus.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: You're either young, young at heart, or both. Since every war brings youth to the front, you lead God's charge into media. So learn the ways and means of this field, without sacrificing innocence: neither your own nor that of your fans.

Yet innocence isn't ignorance. Instead, it's freedom found in Jesus to produce in you the strength to lead. And on the way to your leading roles...

'Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity' (1 Timothy 4:12).

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
