Becoming (Part 8)
Becoming Monogamous
A man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Genesis 2:24 (NKJV)
How I have been grieved by their adulterous hearts, which have turned away from Me, and by their eyes, which have lusted after their idols.
Ezekiel 6:9 (NIV)
For your Maker is your Husband, The Lord of hosts is His Name; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.
Isaiah 54:5 (NKJV)
I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one Husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
2 Corinthians 11:2 (NKJV)
Adultery is a sin. Mostly, it tries to hide. But God says 'There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known' (Matthew 10:26).

Adam and Eve were the Bible's first hiders, but God wasn't having it. Their adultery wasn't marital, but spiritual. It wasn't body-to-body, but mouth-to-food. Because 'You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord's table and of the table of demons' (1 Corinthians 10:21).

God describes His relationship with us in many ways, including: Creator to creation, Potter to clay, Seed to soil, Head to body, Shepherd to sheep, Refiner to silver, Priest to congregation, Temple to worshippers, Physician to patients, Vine to branches, Gardener to trees, Master to servants, Judge to sinners, Governor to citizens, Refuge to victims, Redeemer to slaves, Deliverer to hostages, Bread to eaters, Teacher to students, Captain to soldiers, even Brother to brethren and Friend to friend.

But two relationships are key: Father to child and Bridegroom to bride. In both, we must become monogamous: whole-heartedly devoted to God. Because anything less is unacceptable and anything more is idolatry. When a look becomes a lust, when a person becomes our rock, when a crown becomes our goal, when a thing becomes our focus, we've committed adultery.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: Be models of purity, because adultery can be fatal. Within the Bible, dozens of Chapters and hundreds of Verses detail this sin's consequence. It brought down the holy nation of Israel. What about the Christian nation of America?

' 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great Commandment' (Matthew 22:37-38). If you've given your heart to another, then repent and return to your first Love. Become monogamous and 'Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life' (Proverbs 4:23).

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
