Beginnings (Part 8)
Your Enemy: Bad Leadership
Then He charged them, saying, 'Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.'
Mark 8:15 (NKJV)
Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.
1 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 (NASB)
During the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, consider the crowds. They rose in praise and worship. Jesus, their Leader, was the Leaven from Heaven. But a few days later...
During the scornful trial of Jesus leading to Calvary, consider different crowds. They rose in hatred and condemnation. Priests, their leaders, were the leaven from hell.
'The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds... They all said, 'Crucify Him!' ' (Matthew 27:20,22).
Leaven is a rising agent (like yeast). In the preparation of bread, it's added to the dough, which increases it. Then the bread gets baked and becomes a loaf: fuel for our day's adventures. If people can be wheat, then leaders can be leaven: helping us rise to the occasions of our lives.
But whether we become lovely and full, sedentary and flat, separate and crumbling, or gassy and fallen... is dependent on the leaven. Who are our leaders? Because our very lives depend on Whom we follow.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: consider two things:
1) Your spiritual leaders must contain the Leaven from Heaven, specifically Jesus in the Form of God's Spirit. How can you be sure? 'You will know them by their fruits' (Matthew 7:16). It's not about the quantity of a pastor's congregation, but the quality of a shepherd's heart. It's not about the books they write, but the Book He wrote.
Would your pastor die for you? Is he self-sacrificing and humble? Because if you're fooled by bad leaders, you may rise for a minute, but it won't last: 'If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit' (Matthew 15:14).
2) As God's leaders in the entertainment industry, your role is to rise correctly. Because fans are rising the wrong way by liking the wrong people. Show them the love of our Shepherd's Heart. Lead them into His valley where pastures are real: not covered with green dough, but growing with abundant life.
Lead them to the King's table.* On it is 'The Bread of Life' (John 6:35): the true Rising Agent... that they may rise and stay risen, as you will, as He did.
