Carved Images (Part 4)
The Peril Of False Teaching
They hold fast to deceit,
They refuse to return.
I listened and heard,
But they do not speak aright.
No man repented of his wickedness,
Saying, 'What have I done?'
Everyone turned to his own course,
As the horse rushes into the battle...
How can you say, 'We are wise,
And the law of the Lord is with us'?
Look, the false pen of the scribe certainly works falsehood...
Because from the least even to the greatest
Everyone is given to covetousness;
From the prophet even to the priest
Everyone deals falsely.
For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly,
Saying, 'Peace, peace!'
When there is no peace...
Why have they provoked Me to anger
With their carved images--
With foreign idols?
Jeremiah 8:5-6,8,10-11,19 (NKJV)
I confess distress in reading Jeremiah 8. God's Words are not aimed at outsiders, but insiders. Not at Hollywood, but at holy wood: specifically, our church. They hit us in our heart--right at the pulpit: bullseye.
After 50 years on the outside, now I'm on the inside. I'm in God's church. I'm in a local church. I see Jesus as the Head and my pastor at His Feet. But our culpability as the American church is undeniable:
We've been deceived. We've turned to our own course. We've given in to covetousness. We worship idols alongside everyone else. We divorce our families alongside everyone else.
We carve out of God's Word the parts we like--including our own image of Christ. He is a prosperity Christ; He is a beautiful Christ. Surely not a plain Man. Surely not a poor Man. Surely not such a humble Man. Surely He did not intend that Image for us! Or did He?
Here's the truth: He was carved out once by nails on a cross, but He will never be carved out again:
'For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good Word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame' (Hebrews 6:4-6).
