Then Peter said to them, 'Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.
Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
The Chain that ties followers of Christ to God is His Holy Spirit. He is our missing Link. With the fall of Adam, man's direct tie to God was broken.
On a need-to-lead basis, God appointed certain men and women in Earth's history to key roles. He gave them power. Yet Satan maintained a tight grip on Earth and on us.
He enslaved us by sin, like a chain made of lead. Each sin added one drop of molten lead--which hardened and thickened.
Consider the qualities of lead: it is extremely dense. It resists sound and water. When we are covered by its chains, we can't hear God clearly or drink His living water. Lead is toxic to people.
The only metal denser than lead is gold. It's virtually indestructible, but unusually pliant. It never tarnishes. It's an excellent conductor of heat and power. It treats diseases. Gold is helpful to people.
If sin is like lead, then the Holy Spirit is like gold.
In God's perfect time, Jesus came. His sacrificial death covered our sin with a luster so bright, darkness was overwhelmed. Jesus freed us from the leaden yoke of Satan and then offered us His Own; 'For My yoke is easy and My burden is light' (Matthew 11:30, NKJV).
His golden yoke is hammered thin. Not only is it bearable, but it gives strength to our steps.
When Jesus ascended on high, He 'Gave gifts to men' (Ephesians 4:8, NKJV). The largest Gift is His Holy Spirit: 'The Spirit of truth' (John 16:13, NKJV); 'The Spirit of holiness' (Romans 1:4, NKJV); 'The Power of our Lord Jesus Christ' (1 Corinthians 5:4, NKJV):
Power that heals, helps, guides and fights; Power that ties us to God; Power that turns lead into gold.
