Character Development 2021: More Obstacles To Overcome
Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, 'I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.'
Hebrews 13:5 (NASB)
Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.
1 Corinthians 15:33 (NIV)
God says 'The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil' (1 Timothy 6:10).

Consider the 21st century fallout from this misplaced love: addiction, materialism, and the corruption of our air, water, soil, food, business, rulers and values. Surely, evil abounds.

Just as surely, evil abounded in every age--but never to this extreme. Thankfully, God gives us the character building solution for misplaced love: Be content with what you have. Paul says:

'I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need' (Philippians 4:12).

How? 'I can do all things through Him Who strengthens me' (v.13).

Should we opt out of a bigger house, better car, faster friends, fuller lips or fancy bling--even though media promotes them daily? These are the world's treasures--not God's. 'Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?' (James 4:4).

So what's a star for God supposed to look like? Like Jesus! Radically new. Radiantly simple. Absolutely unique. Otherwise you look like everyone else: 'nouveau riche' (new money).

God's money is ancient. You don't flaunt it. In fact, you share it.

What about the corruption of 'bad company'? How can you go to Hollywood and avoid the glam?

You can't.

But you can remember your position in it: Actors, models and talent for Christ are meant to lead - not follow. A simpler life is an effective statement of confidence. It came down to us from the most effective Man Who ever lived.

It's a statement made without words. Just style.

## Character Development 2021: More Obstacles To Overcome (Part 6)

NOTE: This is a 2020 edit of a 2013 Shine Devotion series, Character Development. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.' Mostly true. But you're not 'merely players.' You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
