Christian Pitfalls (Part 17)
The Lord your God is a consuming Fire, a jealous God.
Deuteronomy 4:24 (NKJV)
Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.
Galatians 5:26 (NASB)
In the Bible, God is jealous for us. He fervently desires our safety, sanctification and salvation: our presence with Him in Heaven. Godly jealousy is not a pitfall, but a peak.

In media, we're jealous for celebrity. We fervently desire its power, prestige and perks: its presence with us on earth. Celebrity jealousy is a pitfall disguised as a peak.

'For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there' (James 3:16).

Actors, models and talent for Christ: before we walked, Satan stalked. In the 20th century, he opened an amusement park called Arts and Entertainment. We didn't have go to it, because it came to us: fascinating frenzy on a screen. It stilled our bodies, but it moved our souls... toward jealousy.

'The average American will spend one and one half years of his or her life watching television commercials. The ads sell a great deal more than products. They sell values, images, and concepts of success and worth... They tell us who we are and who we should be' (Center for Media Literacy).*

Actors, models and talent for Christ: God tells you who you are and Who you should be. Give no one else that power. 'Do not let your heart envy sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day' (Proverbs 23:17).

Remember your King: 'The chief priests had handed Him over because of envy' (Mark 15:10). He allowed envy to kill Him, so it wouldn't kill you.

So live free. Rise and shine. Become a star. Be jealous for your fans. Let them be jealous of you: jealous of your freedom, jealous of your light--and jealous of the joy you display. Then show them the Way to get them. That's the upside of jealousy.**

'I magnify my ministry, if somehow I might move to jealousy my fellow countrymen and save some of them' (Romans 11:13-14).

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
