Command Performances For Hollywood #8
You shall not steal.
Exodus 20:15 (NASB)
#8: No False Saviors

Our enemy is all about taking; Our Friend (and Boss) is all about giving. As His disciples, we can do no less than follow His lead and honor His plan. 'The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly' (John 10:10).

Actors, models and talent for Christ, think! What could entertainers possibly steal? The spotlight! Away from the One True Star.

Roles are hard-won. Competition is fierce. Hollywood veterans grow accustomed to battles and rivalries for bookings.

Stealing stage-time is a common practice. It's called upstaging: a cheeky tactic.

But worse than upstaging fellow actors is stealing eyes and ears from Jesus Christ.

Therein, bad actors are like bad prophets. They're harming the people attending them.

Star-struck fans don't know their vision is blurred. They don't realize they've been embezzled. But they do know something big is missing. Their lives feel empty. They crave fulfillment.

Like the woman with the issue of blood, 'Who Spent all that she had' (Mark 5:26) on false healers. Similarly...

Blinded fans spend of all their attention on famous faces going wrong places. Instead of finding love, hope and purpose; they find lust, distraction and emptiness.

The Lord calls wandering people lost sheep. Media calls them fans and followers.

God's artists live to give- and give to live. Film, fashion, music and theatre are your platforms to magnify Him- not you.

Anything else is to steal His airtime.

NOTE: This is a 2021 update of a 2011 Carey Lewis Devotion. You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players. Mostly true. But you're not merely players. You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.

P.S. To read the other devotions in this series, please see the Command Performances For Hollywood series.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
