Deal Breakers (Part 10: Partying)
Do not be deceived: 'Bad company corrupts good morals.'
1 Corinthians 15:33 (NAS)
Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?
2 Corinthians 6:14 (NAS)
When God's performers receive opportunities from top managers for big jobs, the enemy wants to take them out--any way he can. Today's deal breaker comes when actors, models, and talent for Christ buy into phony smiles and fake highs by partying.

'But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly' (Luke 21:34). What day? Judgment, death, or maybe just your agent saying, 'Enough's enough. Go home.'

That's exactly what happened to a teen fashion model who was invited to start her career in the shelter of an agent's home. When the young beauty was asked to a party with famous people, her agent said, 'No.' So the model snuck out, got caught, and learned a tough lesson.

God wants you to be a role model: to show up on time, to be bright-eyed and cheerful, and to be ten times better than everyone else on set. The talent industry wants it too. Surely their reasons are different, but the outcome of giving in to a party life is the same: deal-breaking corruption.

So don't get cozy with tempters and seducers who 'Think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you' (1 Peter 4:4). 'They are spots and blemishes, carousing in their own deceptions while they feast with you' (2 Peter 2:13).

On the other hand, Jesus ate with sinners. Where do His performers draw the line? Jesus said, 'I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one' (John 17:15).

Whether 'to go' or 'not to go' to any gathering of non-believers should depend on two questions: 1) Your reason: Are you seeking to please God, people, or yourself? 2) Your season: Are you spiritually mature?

If you're not sure of your answers, play it safe. Hang close with believers outside of work. Like Jesus did most of the time with His Own inner circle.

Avoid the deal breaker of partying until you can hang safely with God in the midst of any crowd. 'And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires' (Galatians 5:24).

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
