Deliverance (Part 40)
Sodom, Old Jerusalem & Modern America
You have forsaken Me and served other gods. Therefore I will deliver you no more. Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in your time of distress.
Judges 10:13-14 (NKJV)
Son of man, when a land sins against Me by persistent unfaithfulness, I will stretch out My Hand against it; I will cut off its supply of bread, send famine on it, and cut off man and beast from it.
Ezekiel 14:13 (NKJV)
No king is saved by the multitude of an army.
Psalm 33:16 (NKJV)
What do Sodom, Old Jerusalem and modern America have in common? Idol worship. These prosperous places became capitals of corruption and idolatry. Their governments and leading citizens considered themselves on top of the world.

In the cases of Sodom and Old Jerusalem, they were destroyed by fire. When Abraham petitioned God for Sodom's release, he banked on ten righteous men. They weren't found.*

In the case of modern America, consider God's Words in Ezekiel. ' 'Even if these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would deliver only themselves by their righteousness,' says the Lord God' (Ezekiel 14:14).

Although America is the home of more Christians than any other nation, although our 114th Congress says it's 92% Christian, are we?** Consider three things about Americans:

1) If we think our faith professions will save us, maybe so for late conversions and small kids. But if we're more than new believers in Christ, then we must be about our Father's business.

'You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?' (James 2:19-20).

2) Our Lord instructs us to pray persistently: first to seek His kingdom and His righteousness; next to wait patiently on His good result. So let's turn to Him more fully, as we ought:

'If My people who are called by My Name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My Face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land' (2 Chronicles 7:14).

3) If something disastrous hits America, God gives us a great promise: delivery.

'You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, and see the reward of the wicked' (Psalm 91:5-8).***

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
