Depression (Part 14)
Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28 (NASB)
The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.
Luke 4:18-19 (NKJV)
What is depression but captivity? Victims are bound by cloaks of darkness, chains of heaviness and ropes of reproach. They are lassoed and hogtied on the inside. I believe depression is a heart condition; isolated hearts are besieged by a hostile enemy: one who seeks to kill, steal and destroy.
In the case of born-again believers, God inhabits our hearts. Satan cannot steal them, but can he waylay our witness? Remember, the Babylonians besieged Jerusalem for 18 months. Similarly, if the enemy can encircle us, he will: preventing movement, restricting nourishment and depressing joy.
Doctors say depression is a head condition. God says dig deeper. 'Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it' (Proverbs 4:23). 'As water reflects the face, so one's life reflects the heart' (Proverbs 27:19).
If 'Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks' (Matthew 12:34), then our hearts control our heads, including our mouths and movements... or lack thereof.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: Jesus is The Key to freedom. Only His Statutes of liberty will stand forever. But in America today, has Lady Liberty's heart been sieged? Encircled by merchandisers? Mastered by media? Is she depressed? Is her blindfold still about justice? Or is it now about darkness?
'For behold, darkness will cover the earth and deep darkness the peoples' (Isaiah 60:2).
Actors, models and talent for Christ: repeat after me: By the Blood of Jesus, by the Word of God, by His Promise of freedom, by His gift of wisdom, by His Spirit of life, the siege is broken. When Jesus led captivity captive, the prisoners were released. As His followers, we are free. We will go where He says and be joyful in the process--even to mission field of media.
