Do-Gooders: Ad Lib Crucial Moments
You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father Who speaks in you.
Matthew 10:18-20 (NKJV)
If I'm scheduled to speak at an event, I believe in solid preparation. God's stars practiced long and hard for their roles.

Even so, when they came before rulers who intended to discredit their words (which Jesus, the Preacher, experienced), God stood ready and willing to answer.

Although Jesus came from a nowhere town as a Carpenter (and not a scholar), He aced all verbal examinations. He silenced Jewish interrogators with wisdom that proved inarguable.* While He was profoundly direct with kin, He was far more discreet with the Romans: unlearned outsiders His Father allowed.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: The world's best actors are so gifted and practiced... they ad lib easily; good singers swing into harmonies; skilled musicians play in jam sessions; trained dancers adjust to any beat; top models make everything look good. Experience adds breadth to their gifts.

Your gifts need the same worldly polish. But when it comes to speaking for God, consider three significant points:

1. You need to know Whom you represent. The best Place to learn about Jesus is His Word, because He is The Word. Would God put a player on the field who doesn't know the moves in His Book?

2. If you are both gifted and studied, you will surely be brought before kings. 'A man's gift makes room for him and brings him before great men' (Proverbs 18:16). And if these great men question your Lord...

3. The Word of God will speak for Himself. As He did through His prophets and stars, God's Spirit will put words in your mouth. So remember: Mind your big Boss, respect your small boss and speak through godly inspiration.

* Except on the last day, when Jesus became The Lamb of God, Who remained silent before His shearers and slaughterers.

NOTE: This series is a republished edit of a 2016 series called, 'Do-Gooders.' In these devotions, you may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' I have not changed this designation. Because in a greater sense, every disciple of Christ acts for Christ, models Christ and stewards His talents, from which God expects a profit.

P.S. To read the other devotions in this series, please see the Do-Gooders series.
