Do-Gooders: Avoid Temptation
Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Matthew 26:41 (NKJV)
If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
Matthew 5:29-30 (NKJV)*
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, Who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
1 Corinthians 10:13 (NKJV)
How does avoiding temptation relate to doing good (if it relates at all)?

If you stay put instead of partying,
If you shut up instead of gossiping,
If you show love instead of condemning,
If you uplift instead of naysaying,

If you seek peace instead of debating,
If you hold hands instead of arm-wrestling,
If you thank God instead of complaining,
If you trust God instead of worrying,

If you praise God instead of despairing,
If you're content instead of envying,
If you make do instead of purchasing,
If you eat less instead of devouring,

f you defer instead of parading,
If you keep clean instead of buckwilding,
If you hang tight instead of backsliding,
If you stand up instead of reclining,

If you speak up instead of cowering,
If you go forth instead of retreating,
If you go now instead of postponing,
If you dream big instead of denying,

If you grow strong instead of weakening,
If you remain instead of retiring,
If you invest instead of burying,
If you obey instead of wavering...

You're actors, models and talent for Christ.

Avoiding your biggest temptations keeps you on the path to follow God.

Yielding to your biggest temptations detours you and delays your stardom.

Because shining for God is your job, and doing good is how you get there.

## Do-Gooders: Avoid Temptation (Part 14)

* Short article: Did Jesus mean we should literally pluck out our eyes and cut off our hands in Matthew 5:29-30 and 18:8-9?

* Short article: What are the keys to resisting temptation?

NOTE: This is a republished edit of a 2017 devotion series, 'Do-Gooders.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Every disciple in every field performs for Christ. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.' Mostly true. But you're not 'merely players.' You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.

P.S. To read the other devotions in this series, please see the Do-Gooders series.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
