Do-Gooders: Honor Their Parents
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
Exodus 20:12 (NASB)
Listen to your father who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
Proverbs 23:22 (NASB)
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Ephesians 6:1 (NASB)
If conflict is our enemy's delight, if stirring discord is his strategy, if a world at war begins in the home, if Christians are cast as agents of peace, if Satan wants to prevent this mission, then he seeks to shatter two key unions: husbands from wives and children from parents.*

If our Savior knocks at our own front doors, the destroyer knocks at every door, too. The Former wants to come and dine with us: to make His home with us as dearest Kin. The latter wants to eat us for dinner: to wreck our homes and break up families.

But the King of kings and the evil one aren't the only ones knocking on your doors. In media, knocking is an art form; disrespecting rules and rulers is cool. Among rulers, the first ones are parents. As we learn to dis and disregard them, our scorn naturally spreads to the world. Hating comes easier and easier.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: honoring your parents is crucial. Whether they deserve your love or not--doesn't enter into God's Order. Because none of us deserve God's love based on our outstanding behavior, 'For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God' (Romans 3:23).

When you're still young, you must obey them, knowing God will reward you for it. When you're grown up, you must honor them, by treating them with love and respect. If they don't seem to merit kindness, but you give it to them anyway, you're exampling Christ, which is your job.

Stars for God are called to rise above.

NOTE: This series is a republished edit of a 2016 series called, 'Do-Gooders.' In these devotions, you may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' I have not changed this designation. Because in a greater sense, every disciple of Christ acts for Christ, models Christ and stewards His talents, from which God expects a profit.

P.S. To read the other devotions in this series, please see the Do-Gooders series.
