Do-Gooders (Part 69)
See Beauty In People
Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His Face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.

Matthew 17:1-2 (NKJV)
As He prayed, the appearance of His Face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening.

Luke 9:29 (NKJV)
In this age of altered appearances, where makeup is a mega-industry, where Barbie dolls are our inspirations, where plastic surgeons re-sculpt our features, where Botox removes our expression lines, where needles create artificial lips...

Where buff bodies become our greatest works, where clothing overflows massive closets, where dresses are designed to strut and flaunt, where hairstyles become big budget items, where Photoshop fabricates flawless skin...

Where a mouse click can trim down a waist line, where celebrities gain fame through their looks, where devoted fans want to copy them, where narcissism is an accepted faith, it's hard to see the beauty in plainness.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: When Jesus was a Man, He was plain. He chose to appear ordinary. He didn't want superficial looks to attract surface allegiances. Even so, His closest disciples saw His truly dazzling appearance on the Mount of Transfiguration.*

But while He was walking on the earth, Jesus wanted us to look deeper: to see people the way He sees them.** Because they are lovely in His Sight, they should be lovely in our sight, too. Because they are beautiful to Him, we must learn to redefine beauty. Once done, we'll be seeing more clearly.

True beauty is not artificial.*** HINT: Look for it in eyes and actions.

*** Actors, models and talent for Christ: It's not a sin to be beautiful. Instead, it's a responsibility to exhibit even more beautiful behavior--because beauty attracts attention. It's not a sin to want to be attractive (to advance in the entertainment industry, it's helpful), but it becomes sin when excessive attention or credentials are devoted to it.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
