Do-Gooders: Work For God
The very works that I do--bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.
John 5:36 (NKJV)
If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.
John 10:37-38 (NKJV)
The Father Who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
John 14:10-12 (NKJV)
And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another Book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.
Revelation 20:12 (NKJV)
Believers hear, 'Faith without works is dead' (James 2:20), but do we take it to heart?
Or does God's urgent Injunction get lost in the schemes and dreams of busy brains. Because if It doesn't enter our hearts to stimulate our hands and feet to move in His direction, we may become just as dead as our faith.
In the Books of John and Revelation, earthly works are mentioned 34 times, mostly from the Mouth of Jesus Himself.* Why? What kind of work is He discussing? Is it making a good life for ourselves? Is it building a prestigious career? Is it marrying and buying a home? Is it saving money for retirement? Or is it to be about God's business?
Actors, models and talent for Christ: The work Christ chose was helping others, by doing good whenever He could. While Jesus worshipped God publicly (regularly attending temple) and abided with God privately (regularly withdrawing to pray), He performed public signs and wonders: clear evidence of the Lord's presence.
Because people learn differently, and they come to faith differently. An entire Samaritan village believed in Jesus just from His Words, but even more came to faith by sight. Because for some (including Thomas),** seeing leads to believing. And you're in a great place to be seen. Therefore...
'Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven' (Matthew 5:16).

NOTE: This series is a republished edit of a 2016 series called 'Do-Gooders.' In these devotions, you may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' I have not changed this designation. Because in a greater sense, every disciple of Christ acts for Christ, models Christ and stewards His talents, from which God expects a profit.
P.S. To read the other devotions in this series, please see the Do-Gooders series.
