Dream Haters (Part 17)
She said to him, 'How can you say, 'I love you,' when you won't confide in me?'... With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was sick to death of it. So he told her everything.
Judges 16:15-17 (NIV)
Second to Satan, perhaps the Bible's wiliest whisperer is Delilah, Samson's seductress. Obviously, this strong man had a weakness for women. Even though he was raised in a God-fearing house, even though he was proved an invincible hero, even though he was empowered by Almighty God, even though he was appointed judge for all Israel, he fell by the wiles of a woman.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: Wily whisperers can get you in a number of ways:
1) Flattery: 'With her many persuasions she entices him; With her flattering lips she seduces him' (Proverbs 7:21). 'A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet' (Proverbs 29:5).
2) Magic: 'When they say to you, 'Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,' should not a people consult their God?' (Isaiah 8:19).
3) Insinuation: 'All who hate me whisper together against me; Against me they devise my hurt' (Psalm 41:7). 'A whisperer separates the best of friends' (Proverbs 16:28).
4) Repetition: 'A constant dripping on a day of steady rain and a contentious woman are alike' (Proverbs 27:15). 'With such nagging she prodded him day after day until... He told her everything' (Judges 16:16-17).
Actors, models and talent for Christ: Wily means cunning, and the king of cunning is Satan. When he speaks in a whisper (even by the mouth of another), it seems like an intimate secret. But beware! It's really 'The father of lies' (John 8:44), in disguise; it's a snake cozying up to your ear.
How will you know when whispers are lies? 1) When they build you up instead of God; 2) When they offer magic solutions; 3) When they condemn you or others; 4) When they push you to violate God's Word.
So, do what Samson didn't: When you hear the first naughty whisper, turn around and leave.
