For I earnestly exhorted your fathers in the day I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, until this day, rising early and exhorting, saying, 'Obey My voice.'
Jeremiah 11:7 (NKJV)
'He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.' And with many other exhortations he preached to the people.
Luke 3:16-18 (NKJV)
Exhort one another daily, while it is called 'Today,' lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Hebrews 3:13 (NKJV)
If God exhorted us, if John the Baptist exhorted us, if Paul tells us to exhort each other daily, we need to get serious about exhortation. But what exactly does it mean?
According to the Etymology Dictionary, 'exhort' comes from a Latin word, 'exhortari': 'ex' means 'thoroughly' + 'hortari' means 'encourage, urge.' Therefore, to exhort is to thoroughly encourage or urge. The World English Dictionary adds: 'to advise strongly.'
Whether an exhortation is encouragement or urgent advisement, it's an important communication from God. He expects our fervent response. To what? To His Words. To Jesus. To help others.
Here's the thing: we're living in a blitz worse than London in World War ll. Satan, earth's temporary king, is worse than Hitler, Europe's temporary dictator.
Millions of bombers now circle our globe. Their name is the same: Media. And the bombs they carry are not made of metal, but of flesh: heavy loads of celebrity sizzle. Their explosions mesmerize us. We can't stop watching them fall.
But prolonged staring at false light has blinded us, and prolonged listening to ungodly words has deafened us. To what? The harm of deceitful sin. Satan wants to bury us in it--laughing all the way: 'How fun it is to laugh and sing a slaying song tonight.'
For God's children to survive this blitz, His special forces have been called into action. Their name is actors, models, and talent for Christ. They board the bombers called media and jump into the dark skies of earth as messengers of truth. It's a hard, but vital, job.
Therefore, exhort each other; encourage each other to stay on the path, get in the plane, and jump out in faith. God is with you, army of light.
