Fear: Of Schemers
I am like a broken vessel.
For I hear the slander of many;
Fear is on every side;
While they take counsel together against me,
They scheme to take away my life...
Oh, how great is Your goodness,
Which You have laid up for those who fear You,
Which You have prepared for those who trust in You,
In the presence of the sons of men!
You shall hide them in the secret place of Your Presence
From the plots of man.
Psalm 31:12-13, 19-20 (NKJV)
Have you ever felt surrounded by schemers? David was. Jesus was, too. David's destruction seemed likely, but God did not allow it. Christ's destruction seemed imminent, and God seemed to allow it. But He didn't. The opposite happened:

'When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: 'Death has been swallowed up in victory' ... (1 Corinthians 15:42, NIV).

Conspiracy theorists see schemers everywhere: advertising, education, politics, media, business... and the church. They're probably right. The world is evil, but Christ's bride should be clean. The New Testament is filled with warnings about false prophets. Sadly, I doubt our vigilance in this regard.

We don't like to question what appears to be a rock-solid cruise liners liners of faith. But what if it isn't Rock-solid? What is the faith is misplaced? What if it's a Titanic, destined to sink...

As for me, I want to be reasonably aware of worldly schemes, but unreasonably hopeful... through Christ. Much more, I want to be vigilantly aware of churchly schemes, and unyielding honest... through Christ.

I won't name names, because name calling is a poor witness. I believe church elders and senior members must take the lead in the cleanliness of their own houses... keeping corrections as private as possible.

If they're not willing, men of God and conscience must step forward.

Humor, charisma, popularity, marketability and doctorates of divinity are not listed in the Bible as qualifiers to lead a church.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
