Fellowship (Part 6)
Without Friends?
There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Proverbs 18:24 (NKJV)
A friend loves at all times.
Proverbs 17:17 (NKJV)
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.
John 15:13 (NKJV)
The soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as himself.*
1 Samuel 18:1 (NASB)
George Washington said, 'True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity, before it is entitled to the appellation.' **

The friendship of Jonathan and David is one of the Bible's closest bonds. Consider its beginning: A giant named Goliath challenged the nation of Israel. He proposed a winner-take-all fight to the death. If he won, the Jews would serve Philistia. If they won, the Philistines would serve Israel.

Considering the size of Goliath, no warrior in King Saul's army stepped forward. Just David, the shepherd-boy, who considered the size of God. He ran forward, and the result is glorious history. One of the watchers was Jonathan, Saul's son, a young man of valor himself, estimated to be ten years older than David.

The Verse describing Jonathan's love for David (1 Samuel 18:1) immediately followed the teen's victory. David not only won the contest, but also Jonathan's heart... by his show of faith and courage. Before the fight, David's brothers belittled him. After the fight, David had a friend who would stick closer than a brother.

Jonathan loved David enough to help him, hide him, and prefer David's future kingship to his own. Because Jonathan was heir to Israel's throne.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: God will reveal your truest friends. It may be one, or it may be a handful, but they will come. Prove yourself to them, and they will prove themselves to you. Jonathan saved David when it was hard. David saved Jonathan's son when it was unlikely.***

Your friends will love your success more than their own, and they will love you more than themselves.

* Article on the friendship of Jonathan and David:

** 'Appellation' means name. To paraphrase our first president's quote: 'True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity, before it deserves to be called friendship.'

*** David's kindness to Mephibosheth:

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
