Field Of Dreams (Part 10)
Success Delayers: Fear
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 'Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them.'
Numbers 13:1-2 (NKJV)
'We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there...

Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, 'Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.'

But the men who had gone up with him said, 'We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we. And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, 'The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.'
Numbers 13:27-33 (NKJV)
When the children of Israel left Egypt, it didn't take long to reach Canaan, the Promised Land. Moses appointed twelve leaders to spy the land, and they were gone for forty days. When they returned, ten of the twelve men were terrified of the big cities filled with big men. Joshua and Caleb were not:

'The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us... Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people' (Numbers 14:7-9).*

But the children of Israel did rebel. They threatened to stone Joshua and Caleb. They wanted a new leader to take them back to Egypt. God was so angry He wanted to strike them and disinherit them. Moses pleaded for God's children-turned-rebels.

God relented, but He sentenced them to wander in the wilderness one year for each day of the spy trip. Not only that, but every adult male complainer ruled by fear instead of by God would die on the journey.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: entertainment is a mighty fortress ruled by kings and giants. Run toward these giants like David toward Goliath. A startling parallel exists between then and now, between their forty year exile from the Promised Land and our forty year departure from the field of dreams.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
