Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, 'Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him...'
So all the people broke off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron. And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf.
Idol worship is deadly. Consider the first two of God's Ten Commandments*: 1) 'You shall have no other gods before Me.' 2) You shall not make idols.
Idol worship is sneaky. It crept into King Solomon's life through his wives. 'For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David' (1 Kings 11:4).
Idol worship corrupts the church. After commending the church of Ephesus for its work, labor, patience, persistence and abhorrence of evil, Jesus warned:
'Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place--unless you repent' (Revelation 2:4-5).
Our first love must be God--not our business, nor even our families--and certainly not riches, pleasures, possessions or false prophets exampling false profits. Because anyone or anything we consider before God is an idol. Our first job must be following Jesus and His Word--not a Christian author, nor even our pastor.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: to condemn idol worship in the world is to take the easy shot. So don't take it, because Jesus didn't. Instead, He loved all people and led His fans in a new direction. That's your script, too, as in Scripture.
On the other Hand (the righteous One), Jesus did take the tough shots. He condemned idol worship in the church--because God's people should know better and show better. Follow His lead.
To move forward as a talent missionary in media, be like Daniel in Babylon: Be 'Ten times better' (Daniel 1:20) in performance and ten times better in behavior. Because even in the midst of an idol-worshipping nation, Daniel never sold out His first Love, Who is God.
'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength' (Mark 12:30). This commandment is non-negotiable.
Here's the good news: If you live like Daniel and act like Jesus, your success will chase you down and overtake you.**
