For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God.
Their land is also full of idols; They worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made.
New York and Hollywood are fields of dreams.
'This is the city of dreamers--and time and again it's the place where the greatest dream of all, the American dream, has been tested and has triumphed' (Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York).
'Welcome to Hollywood! What's your dream? Everybody comes here; this is Hollywood, land of dreams' (Pretty Woman, closing lines).
In America, we worship the work of our own hands: the hands of designers and stylists, photographers and cinematographers, plastic surgeons and nurse injectors--all to create made-up models, beefed-up bodies, vamped-up stars, hyped-up heroes and fueled-up fans.
Up, up, up. But where is God in this upward mobility? Certainly not in idol-worship. Perhaps we're not reaching high enough. Perhaps we're distracted by the 'The prince of the power of the air' (Ephesians 2:2).
Currently, he directs a fireworks display called media. It's a manmade light show. Behind it is a black hole in the sky. It's growing larger and larger--attracting the unaware and consuming everything it can--especially children.
New York and Los Angeles are media's capital cities. Meanwhile back home, sitting in the security of church pews and recliners, we complain about the sickening display in the dark skies of entertainment. But we must arise!*
Instead of watching the dreams and nightmares of others, we need to enter this field of dreams--with God-inspired dreams of our own.
In this rising, we do not fear. God's performers will not be swallowed up in blackness--but lifted up in light. Because His Word says, 'Death is swallowed up in victory' (1 Corinthians 15:54).
To Be Continued...
*Arise, shine; for your light has come,
And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
For behold, darkness will cover the earth
And deep darkness the peoples;
But the Lord will rise upon you
And His glory will appear upon you.
Nations will come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.
Isaiah 60:1-3 (NAS)
