Homesick (Part 1)
An AMTC Story
For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light.
Luke 16:8 (NKJV)
Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
Matthew 10:16 (NKJV)
During an AMTC Showcase a number of years back, modeling agents took the stage for a panel discussion. We had Q & A's, and one parent asked a probing question: 'If you sign ten new models, how many end up successful?'

No agent wanted to answer. They looked around at each other. Finally, one of them spoke. She said:

'Here's what used to be normal. If I found ten lovely girls and brought them in for testing, half would be gone in one month. Soon, I'd lose maybe three more. Within six months, one more loss. Basically, only one out of ten would have what it takes.'

The concerned mom followed up: 'Did your clients not like them?'

So the agent continued: 'No, that really wasn't it. Each girl was marketable. We don't have resources to waste on physical maybes. Their problem was homesickness.* Unfortunately, many Americans grow up spoiled. They want things given to them.'

'That's one reason we bring in models from other countries. They work hard and hold the course. We come to AMTC, because talent here is prepped.'

Actors, models and talent for Christ: This agent/parent exchange came during our B.C. years. Yet now we work for Jesus. We train His performers for all the fields of media.

Even so, I must confess a surprising consequence. Compared to the world, more Christians give in to homesickness. When it doesn't come easy, they forget their Commission and abandon the mission.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
