Homesick (Part 9)
For Happiness
Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways. When you eat the labor of your hands, you shall be happy, and it shall be well with you.
Psalm 128:1-2 (NKJV)
Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials...
James 1:2 (NASB)
Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy...
Luke 6: 22-23 (NIV)
My two daughters lead a small offshoot of AMTC: Pretty Penny Models. It offers fashion model management. To date, most of their clients are Christians.

Recently, a lovely grad got homesick. She was just beginning in New York. Like all new talent, she faced challenges. Her response? 'I'm not sure I'm happy here.'

Actors, models and talent for Christ: Consider three words: joy, happiness and fun. God's Word promises foundational joy. His Word acknowledges happiness, too. But they're found in connection with Him.

I believe Americans are confused. With media's power, it's no surprise. We associate happiness with fun. But fun is an untrustworthy partner. Its root comes from lies, cheating and magic.*

Actors, models and talent for Christ: Both joy and happiness come from God. They're in walking on His path for you. They're in working through tribulations. They're in thankfulness for everything.

Even delayed success. Even disappointments. While on trial for his life, remember Paul's great Words: 'I think myself happy' (Acts 26:2). Because he had 'Learned to be content whatever the circumstances' (Philippians 4:11).

Therefore, 'Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer' (Romans 12:12).

And don't be fooled about happiness. For Christians, it won't be found in old ways, fun pursuits or going back home. It's found only in following Christ.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
