Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God.
The hope of the righteous will be gladness...
For surely there is a hereafter, and your hope will not be cut off.
If we read and believe the Word of God, why do saints hope like the rest of the world? Why do we chase things that can disappear?
I should know. I chased the same illusions of happiness most other people chase- for an extremely l-o-n-g time. My hope was entirely on my career, marriage, children and trivial pursuits.
So when my business closed, my marriage failed and our kids left home, life lost all meaning. Happiness seemed an impossible dream. At best, hope was a sputtering candle. I wasn't sure I'd ever been happy, but I was sure I'd never been content.
Even so, in those darkest of moments, hope's faintly glowing light helped me look up. (Dark backdrops are quite helpful in that way.) I saw a radiant Hand reaching down. I grabbed hold and my hope found a new Home: a ceaseless, glorious Rock of ages.
Surely, all of us need reminding, because Satan will never cease winding his slick lies like cords around us...
Lies like purchases and accomplishments,
Lies like people, places and pretty things,
Lies like sensual experiences... are where hope belongs and happiness lives.
The hope of happiness is found in God. Only in God. No one and nowhere else.
