Hot Topics... Child Abuse
Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.
Matthew 19:14 (NIV)
Take tender care of those who are weak.
1 Thessalonians 5:14 (NLT)
Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.
James 4:17 (NLT)
Extreme cases of child abuse often make the news. Justifiably outraged, we share their sad stories. Social media shows its good side by fundraising, and generous people show their support with dollars.
Quickly, we move on to our own wants, needs and concerns.
But what if kids we've met are suffering quietly? What if no one sees them, so their abuse continues? What if they're close to us--in our schools and neighborhoods?
Is it wrong to get involved when we're not invited?
What if it boils down to God's Second Highest Order? The One where we're told to love our neighbors as ourselves? According to Jesus, kids should be a key concern.
Solutions? Do what we now do in airports and public places: Become more aware of our surroundings. Get involved. Pay special attention to children who seem withdrawn.
If we're looking, God will reveal the ones we can help.
