By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents...
By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude--innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.
Consider this definition for a performer who knows how to 'hurry up and wait': a rising star who exceeds expectations and performs with excellence regardless of circumstance or time.
Abraham was a 'hurry up and wait' hero. He was 75 years old when he left a comfortable life in Haran to follow God to Canaan, the Promised Land.
'Get out of your country, from your family and from your father's house, to a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great' (Genesis 12:1-2). 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven' (Genesis 22:17).
Abraham's destiny was superstardom. Therefore, he had super tests.
In following God, Abraham was the point man of the Old Testament. Therefore, he remained ready to the point of living in tents for the rest of his life. He hurried up to wait. On Whom? God. On what? His promises. At stake? The destiny of Israel. His take? Uncountable children who would become a great nation.
Abraham had two significant waiting periods: the first one was long--25 years to be exact. Abraham was 100 and Sarah was 90 when Isaac, the child of God's promise, was born.
His second waiting period was longer: 685 years to be exact. That's the time God used to set the stage and multiply Abraham's descendants into the great nation of Israel.
Therein Abraham was a rising star who exceeded expectations and performed his role with excellence regardless of circumstance or time.
