Judgment: Crowded Jails
The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set free those who are oppressed...
Luke 4:18 (NASB)
So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:36 (NASB)
The land of the free is the land of jails. Our brilliant Lord loves a good irony, but our U.S. prison population (#1 among all of earth's nations) reveals American hypocrisy. But then again, we do talk a good game.

We not only house the most prisoners, but do it with the highest percentage.* Since drug-related charges dominate, consider one racial disparity: '5 times as many Whites are using drugs as African Americans, yet African Americans are sent to prison for drug offenses at 10 times the rate of Whites.' **

Actors, models and talent for Christ: Regarding physical confinement, the U.S. sways in a jailhouse rock, locking down and chaining up millions. Regarding spiritual bondage, the U.S. worships celebrity, possessions, positions and money.

Regarding entertainment's control, we glue ourselves to stars, shows and screens, averaging ten+ hours daily. So what's an actor for Christ to do? Do what He did as best you can.

He was a circuit-walking Preacher, spreading Good News and deliverance. You're media-carried performers, spreading Good News of deliverance. He loved poor people and prisoners. You're playing to the same audience.

Help America's national shame (the subjugation of its people) become a glorious gain for God, because you hold the Key to freedom.

NOTE: This is a republished edit of a 2016 devotion series, 'Judgment.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Every disciple in every field performs for Christ. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.' Mostly true. But you're not 'merely players.' You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
