Judgment: Idolatry
Those who regard worthless idols forsake their own Mercy.
Jonah 2:8 (NKJV)
They have committed adultery with their idols.
Ezekiel 23:37 (NKJV)
Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.
Colossians 3:5 (NASB)
Throughout His Word, God hates idolatry. Because if idols become dear to men, if men consider them first and foremost, if God won't accept second-place billing, then men lose their most crucial relationship.*

Throughout our world, men love idolatry. Because our idols are so dear to us, we work exceedingly hard to get them. Therein, idols become our chief pursuit.

If idolatry in biblical times was the worship of manmade images, then what's idolatry in modern times?** Funny thing: it's basically the same - with more options and fancy packaging.

Today's idols include beauty, power, hobbies, careers, degrees, awards and wealth; positions, possessions and the occult; browsing, texting, posting and media; sports, cars, kids, kin, food, drinks, drugs and affairs.

Sadly, Christians treasure these same idols.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: If America worships idols, if our stars are famous everywhere, if we profit from their promotion, if we export them through media, then we're idolatry's capital.*** Consider two things moving forward:

1) God's stars, Joseph, Daniel and Esther, rose in idolatrous nations, too. They neither judged nor condemned their kings. Instead, they became leaders themselves, without forgetting the true King: God. Cultures were changed by their examples.

2) Like ruling Jews in the days of Christ, have some parading pastors sold out? While pretending to worship the Lord, are they worshipping other gods, too?

How can you discern the difference? You'll know them by their fruit - and lifestyles.

## Judgment: Idolatry (Part 16)

* ' 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great Commandment' (Matthew 22:37-38)... 'But I have this against you, that you have left your first love' (Revelation 2:4).

** Short article: What are some modern forms of idolatry?

** Short article: Why is idol worship such a powerful temptation?

*** Previous 5-part Devotion Series, American Idols:

NOTE: This is a republished edit of a 2016 devotion series, 'Judgment.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Every disciple in every field performs for Christ. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.' Mostly true. But you're not 'merely players.' You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
