Judgment (Part 18)
Conspicuous Consumers
And He said to them, 'Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.'
Luke 12:15 (NKJV)
I have given you an Example, that you should do as I have done...
John 13:15 (NKJV)
To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an Example, that you should follow in His steps.
1 Peter 2:21 (NIV)
The one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.
1 John 2:6 (NASB)
A disciple is not above his Teacher...
Matthew 10:24 (NASB)
Although He reveals Himself in His Word, although His Word came down to live with us, although we see artistry in His works, our unseen God is inconspicuous. He puts His Own brilliance undercover... which is how Jesus, the Man, chose to live. Why?

Could His radiance, if exposed, blind us? Could His power, if exposed, flatten us? Could His majesty, if exposed, awe us into worshipping form, but not substance? Could He be teaching us to look deeper? Could He be showing us humility? Could He be telling us, 'Come, follow Me' (Matthew 19:21)?

Actors, models and talent for Christ: America, the land of the free, parades conspicuous consumers - not only on media's platforms, but also in mega-church pulpits. The former, being raised in the world, may plead the excuse of ignorance. The latter, being raised behind Christ, are ordered to follow their Leader. He was a conspicuous Servant.

Instead of a golden chariot, His biggest ride was on a donkey. Instead of scholarly disciples, His future leaders were fishermen. Instead of a handsome appearance, 'He had no beauty or majesty' (Isaiah 53:2).

Instead of living in a palace, He traveled as a Man with no home. Instead of building up a fortune, He gave away everything He had. Instead of wearing a crown of gold, He wore a crown of thorns for our sins. Instead of choosing His Own safety, He chose to die for our salvation.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: Don't be conspicuous consumers. But at the same time, don't judge the world. Instead, show them how a rich Man lived. Because simplicity is noticed.

'Then Jesus said to His disciples, 'If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me' (Matthew 16:24).
