In Part 8 of this devotion series on leadership, we glimpse the Example of Jesus. No one on earth will ever equal Him, and to follow Him transforms us. Therein, Jesus must remain every Christian's primary Focus.

Even so, God gives us other star examples, including two boys and a girl with extraordinary destinies: Joseph in Egypt, Esther in Persia and Daniel in Babylon. Each entered a foreign culture filled with idol worship. Each represented God with distinction. Each changed a nation.

Consider Joseph, the great-grandson of Abraham. He was sold into slavery by his brothers and taken to Egypt. Even as a prisoner, his talent was noticed. Eventually, he became the governor of earth's most powerful nation: a position that would save God's people. When he was reunited with his brothers, Joseph said: 'You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives' (Genesis 50:20).*

Consider Esther, a Jewish orphan raised by her cousin in Persia. Jews were second-class citizens, but Esther was a first-class beauty. She was drafted into an unusual beauty competition. Her exemplary behavior won the heart of a king and the lives of her people. When King Ahasuerus was tricked into signing a death warrant for all Jews, Esther risked everything to plead their cause. She said, 'If I perish, I perish' (Esther 4:16).**

Consider Daniel, a young man taken to Babylon following Israel's defeat by King Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel and his friends (Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego) adapted like champs, but never became chumps. In purity, prayer and devotion, they stayed faithful to God and rose to fame. Daniel served as an advisor to four kings, three of whom would come to revere 'The God of Daniel' (Daniel 6:26).***

Actors, models and talent for Christ: consider Jesus first. Then consider Joseph, Esther and Daniel: lovers of God in loveless places. God put them in positions to save His people and change the world. He wants to do the same for you. To serve Him, copy them.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
