Little By Little
The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little. You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once.
Deuteronomy 7:22 (NIV)
Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land.
Exodus 23:30 (NIV)
Don't we want our successes quickly? When we sacrifice, step out in faith, and do our very best, we hope for victory now. We want the raise, the role, and the success. We want God's fastest response.
But what we need is God's best response.
God gives us our victories little by little, because we're not ready for everything at once. Some of us are like children saying, 'Daddy, let me have my stuff now, now, now.'
Remember the story of the prodigal son? His father did give him his inheritance 'now,' but the son wasn't mature enough to handle it. He squandered it and brought great misery upon himself.
Although the story has a happy ending, God desires to spare us the prodigal's suffering by giving us our rewards as we become ready.
In Exodus 23:30, God is waiting until His chosen people have 'increased enough' to take possession of the Promised Land. Physically, He's waiting until their population multiplies. Spiritually, He's waiting until their faith, strength, wisdom, and obedience multiply. We need that same spiritual growth.
Therefore, we thank God that our success will be perfectly timed. It's step by step, and audition by audition. One day we will open our eyes to see a flourishing show around us. When we look back on how we got there, only then we will understand why God gave it to us--little by little.
