Love... Does Not Delight In Evil
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
1 Corinthians 13:6 (NIV)
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
Romans 12:9 (NIV)
At first glance, I thought the first part of 1 Corinthians 13:6 did not apply to me--or most believers. Who among us would celebrate evil?
But if I look deeper, I've cheered a few times when a bad guy bit the dust.* Such applause goes against the will of God, 'Who wants all people to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth' (1 Timothy 2:4, NIV);
A God Who says, 'There will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent' (Luke 15:7, NIV);
A God Who says, 'If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you' (Proverbs 25:21-22, NIV).**
Since God gives us undeserved kindness, He expects us to do the same for others.
Since God says repeatedly, 'None is righteous, no, not one' (Romans 3:10, ESV), we are hypocrites to: A) think we do no evil, or B) cheer for the wrong team.
Because 'burning coals' of compassion can warm a stone cold heart.**
Therefore, we love.
## Love Series: Love Does Not Delight In Evil (Part 18)
* 'Don't rejoice when your enemies fall; don't be happy when they stumble. For the Lord will be displeased with you and will turn His anger away from them' (Proverbs 24:17-18, NLT).
** 'Thou shalt make him burn with shame at the thought of the wrong he has done thee. Thus, to bring a sinner to repentance is well-pleasing to the Lord, who shall reward thee for it. This is better far than to indulge resentment, which must bring sorrow to oneself, punishment from God...whose prerogative of vengeance (Romans 12:19) has been usurped...and only serves to harden the offender in his hostility' (Ellicott's Commentary on Proverbs 25:22: http://biblehub.com/commentaries/proverbs/25-22.htm).
