Love... Is Kind
Love is kind.
Be kind to each other, tenderhearted...
So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness...
If love is the opposite of hate, then kindness is the opposite of hostility or disregard.
Kindness is more than a polite answer. It's a genuine desire to make someone else's day brighter... especially when that person seems stressed, sad, shy, lonely or needy.
It's asking a newcomer to lunch; it's bringing supper to the sick; it's visiting the confined; it's writing a thank-you note; it's stopping to change a tire; it's standing up for someone down; it's treating a server with respect; it's smiling with warmth in your eyes.
My pastor (George Dillard)* tells a story of his door-to-door visits decades ago as a young preacher. One day he met a very angry man who cursed him off the porch. George remained kind and apologetic.
Over time, the very angry man became a quiet church man. He confessed he was sitting at home with a gun in his hand when my preacher knocked.
George's kindness in the face of hostility made the angry man think: 'Hmm. Maybe there's one nice guy in the world.'
Lives are saved through lovingkindness.
Therefore, we love.
