Love... Is Neighborly
'Teacher, which is the greatest Commandment in the Law?'

Jesus replied: ' 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest Commandment. And the Second is like It: ' 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two Commandments.'
Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV)
I think of old TV shows like Little House on the Prairie, or new ones, like Hallmark's When Calls the Heart. In rural communities, neighbors can be live-savers.

I think of Parables like The Rich Man and Lazarus or The Good Samaritan.* I reconsider Christ's second-to-the-Top Law: Love your neighbor as yourself.

Here's the thing: How we treat our neighbors isn't just about their wellbeing; it's about our own... as in life or death, up or down, happy ending... or not.

Jesus described who our neighbors are. They're people in close proximity: people God places in front of us... as in, nothing is accidental.

If we serve an intentional God, then neighbors are divine appointments--even the ones we'd rather not see. Are they meant to be our harder tests?

Therefore, we love.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
