Friends Of Jesus
You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn't confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told Me.
John 15:14-15 (NLT)
I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

John 14:3 (NKJV)
Having a friend in high places is great. We receive priority attention in perks, lines, wants, needs or emergencies. But who is higher than the King of kings? Where is higher than the Kingdom of God?

My mom's favorite hymn concerned friendship, as in 'What a Friend We Have in Jesus.' It moves us to recall the benefit of God's Own Son being our closest Friend: His consistent availability in all circumstances via prayer.*

But we must not take His friendship lightly. We must not think of Him like other friends or prefer their company over His. We must not trivialize our Savior or forget He is Lord and Master first.

Which is how it worked for His disciples. Each one loved, learned, grew and obeyed Him first.** Only when they mastered the lower roles did they win the higher roles as His friends.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: Be humble and take the smaller parts. Love, learn, grow and obey your Agent: the One Who sends you into the world and expects a bountiful profit. Only then will your promotion come.

* 'What A Friend We Have In Jesus' sung by Mahalia Jackson:

* Lyrics to 'What A Friend We Have In Jesus' (Joseph Scriven, 1855)

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!

Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged--
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful,
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge--
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He.ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.

Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised
Thou wilt all our burdens bear;
May we ever, Lord, be bringing
All to Thee in earnest prayer.

Soon in glory bright, unclouded,
There will be no need for prayer--
Rapture, praise, and endless worship
Will be our sweet portion there.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
