Parent Traps (Part 21)
Thwarted: By God's Example
And you have forgotten that Word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: 'My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when He rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those He loves, and He punishes everyone He accepts as a son.' Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in His holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
Hebrews 12:5-11 (NIV)
One of the roles Jesus fulfilled on earth was to become our Example. Jesus of Nazareth was both the human Son of wonderful parents and the Ultimate Son of the Ultimate Parent, a.k.a. Abba.

When Jesus was disfigured beyond recognition by blows and scourges, when He silently accepted the world's harshest words and toughest sentence, when He carried the world's heaviest Cross up Jerusalem's hardest hill...

When He was nailed to this Cross in the misery of public spectacle, He was punished for all the undisciplined children of unwise parents: every parental mistake ever made was placed on the Person of Christ.

As God exampled through His Own Son, the truest love allows suffering. Because suffering produces growth. Because discipline yields righteousness. When children pay nothing for their sins, their unpaid debts can cause bankruptcy: moral and spiritual default.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: For instructions about parenting, don't start by seeking worldly experts: professional speakers with big words or bossy moms with big opinions. No one's degree of education can match the Lord's highest education: His written Word and His sinless Son. Let the Father, Son and Holy Ghost show you everything you need to know.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
