Practice Makes Perfect: Can We Be Perfect?
Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you.
Philippians 3:12-15 (NASB)
Can we be sinless? No, 'For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God' (Romans 3:23, NKJV). Can we be perfect? That answer depends on Whom you ask, because Jesus is 'The Author and Perfecter of our faith' (Hebrews 12:2, NASB):
'Then they said to Him, 'What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?' '
'Jesus answered and said to them, 'This is the work of God, that you believe in Him Whom He sent' ' (John 6:28-29, NKJV).
Because faith produces our best work. As bricks build a house, faith builds a legacy. 'Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen' (Hebrews 11:1, NKJV). Faith invites the Hand of The Carpenter to help us, and 'His work is perfect' (Deuteronomy 32:4, NKJV).
Not only is our work made perfect by God, so is our image: 'But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same Image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit' (2 Corinthians 3:18, NKJV).
Little by little, Verse by Verse, prayer by prayer, glory by glory, growth by growth, practice by practice, God makes us perfect. The consummation of His work in our physical bodies won't come this side of Heaven, but we'll look ever more radiant by our efforts. Because our efforts bring God's polish. Imperfections disappear. Increasingly, we reflect His Light.
Actors, models and talent for Christ: Right now, this very day, God sees you as perfect. He sees you through Jesus-colored glasses, because you are covered by the 'Robe of Righteousness' (Isaiah 61:10, NKJV). He sees your promise, and He sees your conclusion. You are 'The apple of His Eye' (Zechariah 2:8, NKJV).
As loving parents focus on the beauty of their children, so your perfect Parent focuses on your potential. He is delighted by your progress: every good word, kind act or forward step.
Therefore, continue in faith, because God wants the world to see what He already knows: your success.
## Practice Makes Perfect: Can We Be Perfect? (Part 3)
NOTE: This series is a republished edit of a 2014 series called, 'Practice Makes Perfect.' In these devotions, you may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' I have not changed this designation. Because in a greater sense, every disciple of Christ acts for Christ, models Christ and stewards His talents, from which God expects a profit.
P.S. To read the other devotions in this series, please see the Practice Makes Perfect series.
