Proverbs For Performers: Bad Counsel In Church
It is not an enemy who taunts me...
I could bear that.
It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me...
I could have hidden from them.
Instead, it is equal,
My companion and close friend.
What good fellowship we once enjoyed
As we walked together to the house of God.
Psalm 55:12-14 (NLT)
The thoughts of the righteous are right,
But the counsels of the wicked are deceitful.
Proverbs 12:5 (NKJV)
Not all church kin or counselors are right. When David, a man after God's Own Heart, was rejected by almost everyone and hunted by the king he defended, his haters included believing friends: best-bud companions in the house of God.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: Churches filled with childlike faith are few. Because kids are designed to grow up, our A.D. churches have grown up, too. But have we grown up in the right way? Into humble, sacrificing saints? Into God's Good News ambassadors?

Or do we look a lot like the world? Dressed up, puffed up and filled up by men: righteous and judging others guilty. Because modern scribes and pharisees have claimed church leadership positions, spinning God's Word and penning their thoughts.

God said, 'You will know them by their fruits' (Matthew 7:16, NKJV).*

So consider the fruits of their work. Are they books, looks, fame, wealth, words and wares? Or are they evidence of service, especially to those forgotten: the ones Christ calls the least of us?**

Actors, models and talent for Christ: Like King David, Jesus was betrayed. He got bad advice from church leaders... and even his beloved disciples: the prior from evil suspicions; the latter from unseasoned beliefs.

So before you trust church counselors, ask your questions directly to God. His Spirit is your perfect Teacher. He promises to give you guidance, and I believe He will affirm it... most likely in the Words of His Book,*** as well as outside circumstances.

## Proverbs For Performers: Bad Counsel In Church (Part 36)

* Full Paragraph, Matthew 7:15-20:

** Along with spreading Good News and making disciples in all nations, this is the work God desires us to do:

*** King David's Words: 'Your Testimonies also are my delight and my Counselors' (Psalm 119:24). The entirety of Psalm 119 (the longest Psalm, which I love!):

NOTE: This is a republished edit of a 2016 devotion series, 'Proverbs For Performers.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Every disciple in every field performs for Christ. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.' Mostly true. But you're not 'merely players.' You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
