Proverbs For Performers: Bad Deals To Avoid
My son, if sinners entice you,
Do not consent.
If they say...
'We will find all kinds of precious wealth,
We will fill our houses with spoil;
Throw in your lot with us,
We shall all have one purse,'
My son, do not walk in the way with them.
Keep your feet from their path,
For their feet run to evil...
They ambush their own lives.
Proverbs 1:10-11,13-18 (NASB)
Now Jehoshaphat had great riches and honor; and he allied himself by marriage with Ahab... Ahab king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, 'Will you go with me against Ramoth-gilead?' And he said to him, 'I am as you are, and my people as your people, and we will be with you in the battle.'
2 Chronicles 18:1,3 (NASB)
Later, Jehoshaphat king of Judah made an alliance with Ahaziah king of Israel, whose ways were wicked. He agreed with him to construct a fleet of trading ships. After these were built... Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, 'Because you have made an alliance with Ahaziah, the Lord will destroy what you have made.' The ships were wrecked and were not able to set sail to trade.
2 Chronicles 20:35-37 (NIV)
Jehoshaphat was a glorious king. He reigned over Judah with distinction and devoted himself to seeking God. For decades, he and God's people prospered. When three nations united against them and they humbled themselves before the Lord, they won a victory like no other.*

But the good king also made two bad deals--with some royal kin who were known to sin. He suffered from these misplaced partnerships, which examples a punch Line from Proverbs: To become yoked with obvious schemers is an accident waiting to happen.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: Don't get confused on issues of sin, concerning your assignment to rise on the stages of entertainment. Certainly, you'll meet people who sin. Just as surely, you're a sinner, too, cleansed only by the Blood of Jesus.

Especially equipped for your job, you are God's media messengers. Endowed with the leaven from heaven, you are God's stars in very dark skies. Because in matters of the Spirit, a little bit of God travels far, rises high and brightens countless lives.

But to go into sin-filled places doesn't mean to bond with sinful men. You have a previous engagement, and this vow supersedes all others. So offer all men God's gracious fruit,** but don't give away your allegiance.

## Proverbs For Performers: Bad Deals To Avoid (Part 3)

* See 2 Chronicles 20, where King Jehoshaphat and his people were threatened by a massive army from three nations. They prayed for God's help and He delivered. 'You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, Who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!' (v.17). Entire Chapter: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Chronicles%2020&version=NKJV

* 2 Chronicles 17-20 is the fuller story of King Jehoshaphat, who sought the Lord, honored the Lord and was miraculously helped by the Lord, even though he made two bad alliances with King Ahab (and his son), from which he suffered. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Chronicles+17-20&version=NASB

** 'But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control; against such things there is no law' (Galatians 5:22-23).

NOTE: This is a republished edit of a 2016 devotion series, 'Proverbs For Performers.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Every disciple in every field performs for Christ. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.' Mostly true. But you're not 'merely players.' You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
