Proverbs For Performers: Leading The Simple
How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity?
Proverbs 1:22 (NKJV)
For the turning away of the simple will slay them.
Proverbs 1:32 (NKJV)
Wisdom has built her house...
She cries out from the highest places of the city,
'Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!'
Proverbs 9:1, 3-4 (NKJV)
A foolish woman is clamorous...
Whoever is simple, let him turn in here...
But he does not know that the dead are there,
That her guests are in the depths of hell.
Proverbs 9:13, 16, 18 (NKJV)
Isn't simplicity to be desired? Like 'The simplicity that is in Christ'? (2 Corinthians 11:3, NKJV).

Simplicity, as in a lack of guile, is a desirable, virtuous trait. Jesus said of His future disciple Nathaniel: 'Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!' (John 1:47, NKJV). The Lord commended his sincerity.

But see Proverbs 1:22 above; It shows the danger in simplicity.* Two Verses in Proverbs 9 tell us why: 'Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!' (Proverbs 9:4,16). These invitations are identical, but come from strongly opposing forces. Verse 4 calls the simple toward wisdom. Verse 16 calls the simple toward death.

Because simple people can be naive. Without the Mind of Christ, they're easy marks.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: Simplicity is like openness. Open hearts and minds are fertile soil. Will they be planted with God's Wisdom, now Personified in Jesus Christ? Or will they be planted with evil, now magnified by entertainment?

Clearly the latter has been in play, judging by so many steamy shows, funded by greedy merchandizers. Their crafty callouts to our children plant sneaky and sassy seeds of lust: lusts... wooing them to grow up quickly into the ways of a selfish world; lusts scorching them by their shallow roots, refusing to reach out for wisdom.

But you have a chance to change all that. The Lord has issued a casting call for His performers to rise and shine. Your role? Leading the simple to Him, that impressionable hearts and minds may be implanted with the Good Seed, with the Wisdom that comes from above.

'That they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified' (Isaiah 61:3, NKJV).

## Proverbs For Performers: Leading The Simple (Part 60)

* Benson Commentary of Proverbs 1:22: 'How long, ye simple ones--Ye ignorant, careless, and credulous persons, who are so easily deceived by sin and sinners, and cheated and deluded by the world, and the god of it, and do not understand or consider your own interest; will ye love simplicity?--Being unwilling to part with it, or to be made wise.' http://biblehub.com/commentaries/proverbs/1-22.htm

NOTE: This is a republished edit of a 2016 devotion series, 'Proverbs For Performers.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Every disciple in every field performs for Christ. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.' Mostly true. But you're not 'merely players.' You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
