Proverbs For Performers (Part 9)
Wisdom: To Get It
Wisdom is the principal thing;

Therefore get wisdom.

And in all your getting, get understanding.
Proverbs 4:7 (NKJV)
For the Lord gives wisdom;

From His Mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 2:6 (NASB)
For wisdom will enter your heart

And knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;

Discretion will guard you,

Understanding will watch over you,

To deliver you from the way of evil.
Proverbs 2:10-12 (NASB)
If wisdom is the principal thing, tied to knowledge and understanding, all of which are treasures beyond price,* this godly trio starts with wisdom. Please note wisdom's starting point: the heart! As in, 'Wisdom will enter your heart' (Proverbs 2:10).

If we think wisdom comes from study (reading books upon books upon books), or observing the men around us (intently watching human nature) or listening to great professors from the world's best universities, then we're not thinking like Solomon.**

'Such 'wisdom' does not come down from heaven, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic' (James 3:15).***

Because godly wisdom comes from God, entering the heart before the head, after a sincere, humble request. 'If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, Who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him' (James 1:5).

Actors, models and talent for Christ: You need to be wise performers, because media is confusing: evil looks good and good looks boring.**** Navigation through polluted air requires both wisdom and protection.*****

But here's something extraordinary: your executive marching Orders call you not just to godly wisdom, but also to industry wisdom. In other words, learn to be cunning. 'Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves' (Matthew 10:16).

So be wise, savvy and innocent. Can you act in all three ways at once? Under the guidance of Jesus, yes!

*** Two Kinds of Wisdom:

**** 'Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!' (Isaiah 5:20).

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
