Proverbs For Performers: Refusing A Bribe
A wicked man accepts a bribe behind the back,
To pervert the ways of justice.
Proverbs 17:23 (NKJV)
You shall not pervert justice; you shall not show partiality, nor take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.
Deuteronomy 16:19 (NKJV)
A bribe debases the heart.
Ecclesiastes 7:7 (NKJV)
Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves; Everyone loves bribes, and follows after rewards. They do not defend the fatherless, nor does the cause of the widow come before them.
Isaiah 1:23 (NKJV)
A bribe is an inducement to corrupt.* Corrupt comes from Latin, and it translates: to destroy, pervert or contaminate, all of which further the devil's desires.

But Jesus pummeled the perp's putrid plans. No part of Him was ever corrupted,** and He offers us His Own purity.

'If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the Blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin' (1 John 1:7, NKJV). But how many of us walk in the Light?

Some...

Judges and cops pervert justice for bribes;
Traitors and crooks destroy people for bribes;
News men and experts twist the truth for bribes;
Politicians pass evil laws for bribes;
Big bosses betray their workers for bribes;
Doctors prescribe dangerous drugs for bribes;
Regulators sell rubber stamps for bribes.
Celebrities endorse junk food for bribes.***

Do believers sell out Jesus for bribes?

As a sad indictment of our culture, some of these corrupting bribes are legal. We call them lobbying or marketing, but they still cause immeasurable harm.

Actors, models and talent for Christ, deny the bribe of a tempting role. A role others might call a big break may help break your connection with God. So how can you know which roles to take?

I believe each calling is unique. Clearly, our Lord was called to sinners and you're called to go into the world. Clearly, media can be sinful and God's stars can influence the world.

That being said, stay deep in prayer. Ask God to direct your auditions. Invite His Spirit to be there, too... and to give you peace in future roles. Bad parts always have a bad odor. Don't ignore a skunk in the closet, even if the room looks beautiful.

NOTE: This is a republished edit of a 2016 devotion series, 'Proverbs For Performers.' You may see notes to 'Actors, Models & Talent for Christ.' If you think you're not in show business, think again. Every disciple in every field performs for Christ. Shakespeare said, 'All the world's a stage and all its men and women merely players.' Mostly true. But you're not 'merely players.' You are messengers and ambassadors for the King of kings.

"I labored, yet not I. By the grace of God, I am what I am, and do what I do' (paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 15:10). I love God's Word. As a late-in-life committed Christian with no Bible training prior to age 51, some people wonder how I'm qualified to write devotions. I wonder that, too. But God loves children and fools for Him. I am both. Ghost Writer? God.
